Insider Gardenissima: Alex Vinatzer

ALEX VINATZER, a native of Selva Val Gardena. Active in FIS competitions since November 2015. Active World Cup alpine ski racer, technical trials specialist, originally from Selva Val Gardena, who boasts 2 medals at both junior and overall World Championships and 2 podiums in World Cup, 5 in European Cup and 4 Gardenissima participations.

What are the motivations for a world-class athlete to participate in a unique and spectacular race, such as the Gardenissima, but still particularly challenging, at the end of a competitive season?
It is always very nice to be able to compete at home, partly because the occasions, in my disciplines, are more unique than rare. It is detected to be always a special and dignified way to end the competitive season, together with my fellow citizens.

What kind of preparation do you reserve for tackling a descent that can last more than three and a half minutes?
Any kind of preparation is never ideal enough, since it is in any case an exhausting race with a duration far above any other competition. In any case by the second part of the course the legs begin to „burn out“ and the finish always seems like a mirage.

Based on what does the choice of materials for Gardenissima fall?
To contend for the final victory, in my opinion, you have to opt for SuperG skis, as even in the most technical part the gate distances are greater than those found in the European Cup or World Cup. For the second part of the course, which is definitely smoother and faster, SuperG skiing is ideal. One must, however, have skill in controlling such a ski, otherwise better to opt for a giant slalom ski.

What is the special feature of Gardenissima, what makes it unique?
So many are the special features of this race. Simply put, the scenery in an environmental, natural and scenic setting of rare beauty, the fact that an amateur can compete with a professional in the world‘s longest giant slalom race, undoubtedly makes the event special and unique.

Podiums in European Cup, World Cup, World Medals, already won. What does it take to win the Gardenissima?
Definitely the right athletic training, fast skiing, smooth skills, tenacity without ever giving up an inch. Some aspects favor athletes in the fast disciplines, but never say never...

A dedication for 26th Gardenissima?
I wish the event to always remain authentic to continue being special, and may it uphold the professionalism and, above all, the enthusiasm from the organizers.
